Dominic Shepherd – Artist Talk
Dominic Shepherd – England
Stonehenge and the M25, Blue Blood and Bloody Histories, William Blake and Love Island — what is English identity, and where does it lie? How does art reflect this sceptred isle’s subconscious and create a map for moving forward? Taking the idea of ‘Englishness’ as an area for investigation, this talk will explore areas of cultural and artistic resonance (‘pastoralism and paganism’, ‘dissent and class’, ‘the eccentric and comedy’), and whether these legacies hold currency in the 21st century, and if so, how. The identity of England is a contested field; as the dust continues to swirl, what form will it take?
Dominic Shepherd graduated with an MA in Painting from Chelsea College of Art & Design, London in 1994, having completed his BA (Hons) Painting at the same college in 1988.
Shepherd is the archetypal contemporary romantic. Working from the woods in Dorset, he is immersed in the nature he finds around him. His work reflects the seasonal changes of his environment and references dream, hallucination, the occult, music, and folklore, ultimately presenting a fascinating fusion of personal and universal mythologies.
Dominic is an Associate Professor at Arts University Bournemouth, where he is Course Leader for MA Painting
