Course Description
Learn the basic skills of oil painting and gain knowledge of working with one of the oldest paint media. Let artist/tutor Robert Rost debunk the myth that oil painting is difficult to learn and apply. Over six-weeks Robert will share with you his understanding and experience of oil paint, imparting the basic principles of colour, pigments, mediums, materials and techniques. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to make your own paintings in the beautiful and versatile medium of oil colour.
This practical course is encouraging and supportive, and available to anyone with the necessary materials, a table-top to work on and access to Zoom. Session recordings will be automatically available for the duration of the course for absentees or those wishing to enjoy the class again.

Thursday 19 Sept 2024/ 18:00-20:00 | Introductions | What oil paint is and the basic knowledge you need to be able to begin using it. Paint composition and oils, solvents and mediums. An introduction to brushes, grounds and other materials and best practice in relation to health, safety and the environment. |
Thursday 26 Sept 2024/ 18:00-20:00 | Oil colour techniques and mediums | oil painting techniques and oil mediums. Benefits of different mediums in relation to technique. You will learn about painting a la prima, glazing, scumbling, impasto as well as correct use of tools. |
Thursday 03 Oct 2024/ 18:00-20:00 | Colours & pigments | A focus on the use of colour when using oil paint. Investigatation of colours and pigments and their unique properties, use and application. Use and creation of basic colour palettes & palette management |
Thursday 10 Oct 2024/ 18:00-20:00 | Colour techniques | Colour in combination with the techniques learnt to date. We explore the perception of colour and look at various ways to create colour effects with oil paint, including use of the Zorn Palette. |
