
Course Description
Create your own botanical watercolour paintings in this hands-on course with artist Andrew Carter. Through step-by-step demonstrations, Andrew will guide you from initial pencil sketches to expressive mark making and confident colour mixing. You’ll also learn about watercolour paints, how to set up your workspace, and simple tips for cleaning up. Alongside these techniques, you’ll explore creative themes and motifs inspired by the beauty of plants and the natural world.

Timetable:
| Session 1/ 18:00-20:00 BST_ 13:00 ET_10:00 PT | Experimentation with watercolour, brushes, dry/damp paper colour saturation and transparency. Explore the use of under drawing and constructing an image by layering colour and using washes. Introduction to colour mixing and developing an understanding of mark making. |
| Session 2/ 18:00-20:00 BST_ 13:00 ET_10:00 PT | Working from botanical specimens, weeds, sprigs and wildflowers, experiment with observing and mixing specific local colour and perceived colour |
| Session 3/ 18:00-20:00 BST_ 13:00 ET_10:00 PT | Including plants as part of a still life, focus on the arrangement of colour and shapes to create a geometrically well organised composition. Locate colour in space through simple measuring and awareness of tonality and saturation. In these two classes you will experiment with painting from direct observation and learn how to be in control of your composition. |

| Session 5/ 18:00-20:00 BST_ 13:00 ET_10:00 PT | Taking a number of plant, leaf, sprig, flower, branch and twig motifs explore designing with an underlying pattern. Working with a grid to help structure the design, emphasis will be placed on creating a complicated, interlocking, overlapping series of shapes that will connect to form an intricate pattern motif. |
